Sales and Marketing Director Innerspec Technologies, Inc. Lynchburg, VA EMAT Based Ultrasonic Inspection: Out of the Lab and Onto the Line Jeffrey S. Monks, Sales and Marketing Director of Innerspec Technologies, Inc.-Lynchburg, VA will be presenting an overview of Automated EMAT (Electro-magnetic Acoustic Transducer) Based Ultrasonic inspection applications. EMAT induced ultrasound is an electromagnetic means of creating ultrasonic waves within metals for Nondestructive inspection requiring NO COUPLANT. While EMAT has seemingly been concentrated, primarily in research and development labs and educational institutions, there are over 60 commercial installations, which have logged several million hours of automated, non-contact, ultrasonic inspection in the harshest of conditions. EMAT theory, history and applications will be discussed as well as case studies, and new application areas. The success of these installations demonstrate the current capability in industry to employ the benefits EMAT based inspection offer, including volumetric inspection, thickness testing, weld/seam inspection, nodularity testing, hardness variations, and flaw detection at high temperatures, with poor surface condition, in high speed, and harsh industrial environments. The audience will be informed of actual installations and applications, which will allow parallels to be drawn to similar applications, which have not yet exploited the potential benefits of EMAT inspection. Comparison/contrasts to eddy current and conventional ultrasonic inspection will also be reviewed. Ample Q&A will be provided as well. About the Speaker: Jeffrey S. Monks, an ASNT National Director, regional director, chairman of the ASNT Exhibitor’s committee, past president of Northern Indiana and Mid Indiana sections and member of AISE, AWS, and ISS is the Sales and Marketing Director of Innerspec Technologies, Inc., a 1998 commercial spin-off of The Babcock and Willcox company.
